When he received the wedding invitation from Cora and Clyde, Andrew Sutherland was livid. Nothing was working out the way he wanted it to, and now he could see that all his carefully laid plans were in danger of being trampled upon by Cora Henderson. It had given him great satisfaction to take Loraine from Clyde, but now all his plans were in jeopardy.
Clyde Munro was everything the baron would never beâtall, strong, and handsomeâwith the kind of genial personality that people, especially women, liked. Andrew enjoyed the adulation of having a pretty woman on his arm, and he enjoyed it more because he had broken her betrothal with Laird Munro. As well as that, he loved the skillful ways she pleased him in the bedroom, and felt twenty years younger because of it.
There were more practical reasons for his desire to wed her, though. He was drowning in gambling debts, and her generous dowry would pay them off and leave him with some left over for his other schemes. He would also have an alliance with Loraineâs father, Laird Joseph Mackenzie. He was a weak-willed milksop of a man, but his lands were rich, his castle enormous, and his garrison the most well-manned and powerful in the area.
Now that was all being put in jeopardy by Clyde Munro and Cora Henderson. Munroâs garrison had been decimated by the English, but it would not take long to build it up again; the work was already in progress. Cora had come off even worse. Her castle was still occupied, if only by a bunch of worthless thugs from the Lowlands, but with a decent band of soldiers, it could be taken back, and the baron had seen for himself that the young woman could inspire loyalty. Perhaps he should have asked for her hand instead!
However, it was too late for that now. Once Munro had replenished his garrison and given Cora her castle and lands back, they would be a force to be reckoned with, and he could not endure a threat to his dominance. Now was the time to act. He poured himself a full tumbler of whiskey and sat back to think.
He perused the wedding invitation again. The marriage was set to take place in ten daysâ time, which gave him plenty of time to act. He sent for Loraine.
